Samsung to unveil new 3D ToF sensors for AR/VR devices at VLSI Symposium 2023

Samsung is reportedly set to unveil new 3D Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensors at the VLSI Symposium 2023 event. The sensors are expected to feature an on-chip Image Signal Processor (ISP) and utilise 2-stack process technology. One of the sensors is said to have a 65nm Back Side Illumination (BSI) layer and a 28nm CMOS area. It is rumoured to be capable of measuring distances up to 5 metres at a frame rate of 60 fps. The sensor is designed to be low-power, with a consumption as low as 188 mW.If accurate, these sensors could be integrated into future AR and VR headsets, allowing for precise distance measurements and gesture recognition. It is likely that Samsung Electronics’ System LSI arm will develop these sensors, given their expertise in semiconductor technology. The potential use of these sensors in Samsung’s upcoming XR headset remains to be confirmed.
