The emerging Web3 ecosystem aims to revolutionise creator-audience engagement and business models by prioritising privacy, decentralisation, and ownership. While Web1 was limited to read-only content and Web2 introduced user-generated content, Web3 aims to empower users to read, write, and own their data, shifting power from centralised entities to individuals. However, the execution of these ideals has been challenging due to existing power structures. As the quest for an open metaverse continues, questions about ownership and interoperability arise. According to a survey conducted at Consensus, opinions are divided on who will own the metaverse, with some suggesting megacorporations like Meta, while others believe in a unified digital world owned by everyone or no one. This raises concerns about the creator-first digital economy and optimal business models enabled by Web3 technology, as well as the content that will attract consumers to the metaverse.
