FAA collaborates with Swiss startup for VR-based helicopter pilot training

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is partnering with Swiss technology startup Loft Dynamics to explore the use of virtual reality (VR) technology for helicopter pilot training. Loft Dynamics will provide VR flight simulators that combine VR headsets with scaled-down control panels and cockpits for the FAA to evaluate. Two simulators, designed for training on Airbus SE’s H125 and Robinson R22 helicopters, have been installed at the FAA’s facility in Atlantic City. The agreement marks the FAA’s first review of VR headsets for training purposes, specifically targeting the helicopter market. The partnership does not equate to certification of the technology in the US, and it is not intended for commercial plane training. Loft Dynamics aims to provide a more streamlined and cost-effective method of training pilots across different aircraft types, potentially replacing traditional training schools and instructor-intensive programmes. The company’s certified systems have garnered $20 million in investments and have already been deployed in Europe.
