Google, the dominant force in digital advertising, has updated its policies to allow ads related to blockchain-based non-fungible token (NFT) games, starting September 15. While the company initially banned most blockchain-related ads in 2018, it began readmitting certain types in 2021. The new policy permits ads for NFT games that allow players to purchase in-game items like virtual apparel and weapons but still restricts ads from games involving NFT staking for rewards or those promoting real-world gambling. To advertise, games must comply with Google’s policies and certifications. This move is expected to boost the NFT industry, which has seen fluctuations in market activity and valuations, moving beyond the initial hype cycle to explore new use cases. Companies like Mastercard are also entering the NFT space, emphasising its growing significance.
