The “Demonised: Possessed and Bewitched” exhibition at Carrickfergus Museum in Ireland uses virtual reality (VR) technology to immerse visitors in the last witch trials in the country. Created in collaboration with Ulster University academics, the VR tour transports users back to the 1711 trials of nine individuals accused of witchcraft. The VR experience, developed by Sentireal, enables visitors to see both the accusers’ and accused’s perspectives, providing insight into the fear and confusion of the time. The exhibition sheds light on a dark chapter of Irish history, challenging assumptions and fostering a better understanding of those marginalised by accusations of witchcraft. It also highlights the importance of merging academia and technology to engage modern audiences with history.
